New PR Assistant

The ATAYAL organization is happy to welcome Robert Fisch to our team as our new PR Assistant. Robert is an American from Las Vegas who is in Taiwan for a year as part of the Fulbright Program. He will work with Sylvia Dean to write articles as a reporter and press releases as part of the PR staff. Robert has a strong interest in indigenous culture and linguistics and wishes to learn while in Taiwan and give back to society. He is also improving his Chinese language abilities during his visit.

Indigenous Film Festival Calls for Applications

Entries are open for the 2020 Indigenous Arts Exchange Festival. Inviting documentary or performance proposals that demonstrate indigenous culture and facilitate cultural exchange. Last date for submission is April 1st. The festival will take place in the Fall of 2020. October 22, 2019: Indigenous Bridges has issued a call for entries to the first annual Indigenous Arts Exchange Festival, taking place during the summer of 2020. Indigenous Bridges is the name of the series of programs organized by the ATAYAL organization, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization committed to preserving indigenous cultures and empowering aboriginal peoples around the globe. At the festival, there will be fundraising efforts to support the mission of the organization, and opportunities to allow new ideas and unheard voices to shine through. Lecture Series: Austronesian Identity, an International Opportunity for Taiwan

On Tuesday, October 22, 2019, Tony Coolidge was invited to give a lecture on "Austronesian Identity, an International Opportunity for Taiwan" to students and staff at National Changhua University of Education . It is an ongoing lecture series that Mr. Coolidge provides to universities and civic groups around Taiwan. Often, he is asked to introduce Taiwanese indigenous culture to foreign students in Taiwan, but for Taiwanese students and academicians, he provides a lecture about international opportunities for Taiwanese, through their various cultures. A YEAR OF REORGANIZATION In April 2019, the ATAYAL Organization re-organized, re-branded and streamlined its core services as Indigenous Bridges (IB) to better focus the mission and activities of the organization. A new web site ( https://www.indigenousbridges.org ) was built to improve the presentation of our organization. The Indigenous Bridges Network, an international platform for indigenous cooperation, was developed to connect and consolidate volunteers, resources and opportunities. Indigenous exchange programs are facilitated within three departments: Culture, Education and Media. The organization, founded in 2001, has never been in a better position to attract personnel, partners, supporters and funding to establish sustainable programs. Our Deputy Director

Our organization is proud to assign Mr. Gary Smoke to the position of Deputy Director . Mr. Smoke has been a longtime volunteer as an administrative and program leader for our organization since 2010. Since then, he has actively supported all of our activities in Taiwan to develop exchanges with indigenous groups. As a Seattle-area native and resident of Taiwan, he has been the ideal bridge, developing international cultural exchanges as Director of International Affairs since 2013. His commitment and persistence for cultural exchange with the Native Americans of Washington State resulted in the creation of the current Tribal Journeys Indigenous Youth Exchange Program (TJIYEP). Because of his experience, connections, and big heart for giving back to society, Mr. Smoke, a Vietnam Veteran, has left an indelible mark on the people who he has worked with. As the ATAYAL organization is expanding its Indigenous Bridges programs, we are currently recruiting volunteers, directors, board members and Indigenous Cultural Representatives (ICRs). Our organization has been a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been 100% driven by volunteers since its founding in 2001. By building connections between indigenous tribes of the world, and facilitating exchanges and cooperation, the organization requires many types of skills, experience and expertise. What we offer our volunteers is practical experience that strengthens resumés, plus the satisfaction of producing lasting results that helps to empower indigenous youth and preserves indigenous cultures and languages for future generations.
